{"id":2039,"date":"2016-06-13T22:34:24","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T22:34:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/colinjohnson.me.uk\/blog\/?p=2039"},"modified":"2019-03-07T23:41:44","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T23:41:44","slug":"cringe-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/colinjohnson.me.uk\/blog\/?p=2039","title":{"rendered":"Cringe (1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a minor genre of entertainment (see e.g. the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LondonCringe\/\">Cringe<\/a> nights and associated book, and the Radio 4 programme <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b00x8dq1\">My Teenage Diary<\/a>), which consist of people reading out excerpts from teenage diaries, poems, etc. Here is my contribution, albeit from a slightly earlier age. These are two poems that I found whilst looking through some old folders whilst clearing out my parents&#8217;s house. They were clearly considered good enough, back in 1981 or whenever, for me to have been asked to copy them out of my schoolbook in my &#8220;best writing&#8221; (still pretty crap, though interesting to see traces of the &#8220;Marion Richardson&#8221; style of penmanship such as the lower-case k with a loop in it), and been displayed on the classroom wall.<\/p>\n<p>The first is a nice poem about Spring. It rhymes well, but the scansion could be improved:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/colinjohnson.me.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Spring1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2244\" src=\"https:\/\/colinjohnson.me.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Spring1.png\" alt=\"Spring\" width=\"484\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/colinjohnson.me.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Spring1.png 968w, https:\/\/colinjohnson.me.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Spring1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/colinjohnson.me.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Spring1-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In spring the plants come shooting up.<br \/>\nEaster eggs don&#8217;t go in egg cups.<\/p>\n<p>In spring we get and extra hour of day.<br \/>\nSo now we can all shout &#8220;Hooray&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In spring the baby lambs are born,<br \/>\nAnd we can begin to plant the corn.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Very bucolic. The next is more exotic, to the point of borderline racism. I particularly like the illuminated capitals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/colinjohnson.me.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/treasureIsland.png\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2245\" src=\"https:\/\/colinjohnson.me.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/treasureIsland.png\" alt=\"treasureIsland\" width=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/colinjohnson.me.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/treasureIsland.png 732w, https:\/\/colinjohnson.me.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/treasureIsland-199x300.png 199w, https:\/\/colinjohnson.me.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/treasureIsland-679x1024.png 679w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 732px) 100vw, 732px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On treasure island, with lots of palm trees.<br \/>\nThere is a treasure chest that has no keys<br \/>\nThe treasure was buried by pirates of old.<br \/>\nPirates who were brave, strong and bold<\/p>\n<p>On treasure island with tall mountains<br \/>\nThere are lots of pleasant fountains<br \/>\nThe island surrounded by water so cold.<br \/>\nThe treasure is made up of diamonds and gold<\/p>\n<p>On treasure island there are no animals;<br \/>\nBut there are a lot of cannibals<br \/>\nThe island defended by natives with spears<br \/>\nThe treasure dates back by thousands of years<\/p>\n<p>On treasure island in the sun<br \/>\nThe treasure has not yet been won<br \/>\nThere is a volcano with red hot lava<br \/>\nAnd a river we called the garva.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Good to see a decent attempt to use semicolons. I think &#8220;garva&#8221; in the last line is an attempt to write &#8220;Java&#8221;, though it might just about have been a sod-it attempt to find something to rhyme with &#8220;lava&#8221;. There is probably also some influence from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Griffin_Pirate_Stories\">Griffin Pirate Stories<\/a> (Roderick the Red, etc.), which I remember reading voraciously at around that time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a minor genre of entertainment (see e.g. the Cringe nights and associated book, and the Radio 4 programme My Teenage Diary), which consist of people reading out excerpts from teenage diaries, poems, etc. Here is my contribution, albeit from a slightly earlier age.
